Don Schumacher Racing Valvoline/MTS NHRA Funny CaR

This actual car holds the NHRA World record for the fastest and quickest run at ¼ mile distance. (NHRA shortened the distance to 1000 feet in 2008 for safety reasons). Elapsed time record for the ¼ mile is 4.662 seconds with a top speed of 333.66 MPH

  • Engine: Supercharged, fuel injected, V-8. 500 cubic inch displacement. 8000 horsepower. 7000 ft. lbs of torque.
  • Weight: 2100 lbs.
  • Fuel: 90 % Nitromethane, 10% Ethanol. Fuel consumption for one run is over 4 gallons or the equivalent of 16 gallons per mile. Fuel pump delivers 65 gallons of fuel per minute at over 400 psi, or the equivalent of 8 bathroom showers running at the same time. Fuel cost is $40 a gallon.
  • Rear tires last approximately 2-4 miles.
  • The driver experiences over 5 g’s of acceleration (same as a Space Shuttle launch) and over 7 g’s when the parachutes open to slow the car.
  • Acceleration from 0-100 MPH takes less than 1 second. 280 MPH is reached in a little over 600 feet.
  • One run, including the burn-out costs about $6000 in parts, fuel, oil and tires.
  • Engine and clutch are completely rebuilt after each run, giving the engine a life span of about 3 - 4 minutes.
